Diddy League Report Round 1
On Saturday 12th April we made the short journey down the M5 to Bromsgrove for the first round of the Nuneaton and District Junior League. At the Dolphin Centre we were competing against Droitwich Dolphins, Apex, Evesham, Bromsgrove and Northampton B. We knew the opposition was going to be tough with Stafford Apex making last years Division 2 final and both Bromsgrove and Evesham finishing in the top eight.
Our start to the evening could not have been better as Lucy Furnell opened proceedings with 1st place in the 10yrs 50m Freestyle. This was one of 14 1st place finishes with individual wins for Sam Harmon, Kyle Furnell, Shannon Gill, Jade Shepherd, James Booker and Emma Marsh in both 11 and 12 year age groups. There were also victories for 10 and 11 year Girls freestyle relay teams the 12 year boy’s freestyle relay team as well as all three cannons. Team of the night had to be the girl’s cannon comprising of Jade Shepherd, Millie Johnson, Lucy Furnell, Olivia Hodgetts, Georgina Johnson, Madison Brookes, Bethan Johnson and Chelsea Mannion. They left the other teams in their wake as they finished over half a length ahead.
There were some great swims from all of our 9 year boys and girls with Megan Crofts competing for the very first time. A big thank you goes to Kai Totney who stepped in at the last moment and without whom we may have only managed 3rd place.
The points were close and the lead changed places several times throughout the night but in the end we finished a very respectable second place behind Droitwich Dolphins.
Final points were as follows – 1st Droitwich Dolphins 202, 2nd Brierley Hill 197, 3rd Evesham 192, 4th Stafford Apex 191, 5th Bromsgrove 142, 6th Northampton B 127.
Next round will be tough as we face our local rivals Haden Hill at Wombourne on 10th May.
Thank you to Les Marsh and Carl Bayley for officiating and chaperones Helen Marsh and Deb Davies.
Well done swimmers!!!!!!!!
14 1sts, 9 2nds, 7 3rds, 8 4ths, 6 5ths and 3 6ths
Mercian Report Round 1
6th April we headed off to Nuneaton for the first round of the Mercian Summer League. Pingles Leisure Centre is always a great venue and this time was no different. We competed against Worcester, Solihull, Nuneaton, Rugby and Oldbury. Considering the excellent quality of the opposition this was one of the closest galas I have ever been to.
We could not of anticipated the start we got off to with wins for both Martin Griffiths and Esther Allen in the 100m individual medley ( for the benefit of one of our parents individual medleys only have one swimmer not four that is why they are call IN-DI-VIDUAL.). This is even more impressive when you consider that Martin has not been in a pool for over 4 months. Wins for the girls 10 year freestyle relay team and boys 12 year medley relay team followed shortly afterward.
After the first 10 events we were leading with Worcester close behind. Further 1st places went to Shannon Gill, Natasha Jackson and Amy Mills, 2nd places to Kyle Furnell, Jake Edwards and Chelsea Mannion and 3rd places to Gemma Bayley, Natasha Jackson, Luke Taylor, Jack Bailey and Sam Harmon all adding to the points tally. Despite these great swims at the half way point we slipped into second place. The points were as follows - Rugby 60, Oldbury 62, Solihull 123, Worcester 124, Brierley Hill 125 and Nuneaton 126. It does not get much closer than that!
First places eluded us in the second half of the gala with decisions not going our way. However, there were still some great individual swims and PB’s with 2nd place going to Esther Allen, Chelsea Mannion, Matt Holland, Sam Brettle, Natasha Jackson, Martin Griffiths and 3rd place to Jake Edwards, James Booker, Sam Brettle, Shannon Gill and Shane Hazell.
We finished in a respectable 4th place on 201 points with no DQ’s and only 13 points separating the first four teams. The final positions are as follows – 1st Nuneaton 214, 2nd Solihull 211, 3rd Worcester 209, 4th Brierley Hill 201, 5th Rugby 101, 6th Oldbury 100.
A big thank you to all the swimmers for competing especially Jake who cancelled a prior arrangement and put the team first! Thank you to Kim Smith, Wayne Hazell and Ade Wells for officiating and Chaperones Carl Bayley and Karine Brookes. I do hope Karine was not too traumatized when she was told she was in the male changing room. She went a lovely shade of red and bolted for the nearest exit averting her eyes before realizing that they were actually communal changing rooms.
Well done swimmers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Next round is on June 7th venue to be announced.
1st - 7, 2nd – 12, 3rd – 16, 4th – 7, 5th – 6, 6th – 2.

Guess Which Squad member?
28th February 2008
Well another great time had by both parents and sons/daughters at this years half term camp at Aldershot.
The training camp was well attended by members of both A and B squad and it was encouraging to see such a good turnout of the younger members of the squad.
I am sure it will be agreed by all who attended, that all squad members were great ambassadors for the club.

Gold and Silver Triumph - 09/11/2007 13:04:27
A tutor from a Black Country College has struck Gold and Silver in the European Masters Championship in Slovenia.
Lindsey Gowland from Kingswinford, who teaches sport at Dudley College won Gold in the 50m freestyle and, with a British Masters Long Course Record, a Silver in the 100m freestyle.
Lindsey who swam in the age 50 - 54 years category swims for Brierley Hill Swimming Club and carries out her swim training at both Dudley and Coseley Swimming baths. In the run up to the competition she swam approx. 20,000 meters over five days a week with land training in the college's newly refurbished fitness suite.
Lindsey said, "It is great to see so many adults from all walks of life swimming and having fun, there are some fantastic people who inspire everyone they meet. I am really pleased with my achievements and thanks to everyone who supported me, Ray Kearsey - my coach from BHSC, Jim Page my trainer at the college and of course my family.
In the English National Masters competition, recently held in Sheffield, Lindsey again took Gold in the 50m freestyle setting a British Masters Short Course record in a time of 29.25. The Ponds Forge International Sports Centre provides world class swimming facilities and plays host to the world's best swimmers.
ALDERSHOT WEEKEND
Why do I get up at 5.00 to go swimming at 6.00 until 7.00 every Friday? Do I really want to sit on the side of the pool for another session, watching the Kids do another 80-140 lengths? Do I really want to be tired during the day, and the rest of the weekend? Why do I do it? Originally it was Esther who wanted to go, in order to get an extra session in. Now it is Ruth and myself find we are keen to go, and if we don’t we feel we have missed an opportunity. The getting up becomes routine. Decided that if we could swim at the same time, it would be time well spent, at least doing some exercise each week Although Ruth used to swim for exercise, I was a non-swimmer. We were soon to find out how good A and B squad really are. At first we only did 2 lengths at a time and it took loads of effort using muscles we hadn’t used for years. By the end of a session we had done 20 lengths. But after a few weeks 20 lengths had become 40 lengths, and it had become easier. Over a period it became obvious that the coaches Herr Gruppenfuhrer Kersey and Sergeant Major Jones, weren’t just wandering up and down the side of the pool.(What are those coaches doing, we’re paying a subscription etc……….). Being in the pool and being given some guidance even for Veteran swimmers like myself, made me realize the way the swimmers are geared up and down, work level wise and technique wise during certain times of the week and for forthcoming Galas/Open meets. Soon the Friday morning sessions had inspired me to swim on a Monday evening instead of watching. How many hours had I wasted in the past, dutifully supporting my flesh and blood to and fro up the pools . No more, we now feel fitter and healthier, (don’t be fooled, these well covered exteriors hide ‘elite athletes’) Have to admit that by 3.00pm on a Friday I do feel tired, and ache nicely, roll on Monday.
Venue:- The Wordsley School, Brierley Hill Road Mondays and Fridays 6.00 until 7.00 Cost. (Adult members £2, squad swimmers it is included in fees)
